Tykholaz Sophia Ivanivna


Head of Latin Language and Medical Terminology Department, PhD of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor

In 1986 she graduated from the Faculty of Foreign Languages of Vinnytsya Mykola Ostrovskyi State Pedagogical Institute in a specialty "English and German Languages" and subsequently started to work as a lecturer at the Department of Foreign Languages of National Pirogov Memorial Medical University, Vinnytsya; since 2000 - as a senior lecturer; since 2012 - as an associate professor of the department. During 2001-2016 years Sophia Ivanivna was a head of the Latin Language and Fundamentals of Medical Terminology Course; member of the Methodological Council for Work with Foreign Students, the Methodological Council for General Theoretical Disciplines, the Methodological Council of the Pharmacy Faculty. During 2011-2016 years she was a Deputy Head of the Department for Work with Foreign Students. Since 01.09.2023 – Acting Head of the Department. Since 29.02.24 she is the Head of the Latin Language and Medical Terminology Department of National Pirogov Memorial Medical University, Vinnytsya.
In 2007 the rectorate recommended S.I. Tykholaz to study as a postgraduate student at Mychailo Kotsiubynskyi State Pedagogical University
Vinnytsia Mykhailo Kotsiubynskyi State Pedagogical University, specialty 13.00.04 "Theory and Method of Professional Education". 19.04.2011 she defended her PhD dissertation “Pedagogical Conditions for the Development of Professional Orientation of Medical Universities Students ". In 2013 S.I. Tykholaz was assigned the academic title of Associate Professor of the Foreign Languages Department.
During 2010-2014 years she was responsible for research work of the department "Preparation of medical university students for foreign language professional communication".
Sophia Tykholaz participated in the work of the specialized Academic Council D 05.053.01 at M. Kotsiubynskyi VSPU as an official opponent (2012).
She is a member of the Academic Council of the University, the Academic Council of Medical Faculties, the Academic Council of Dental and Pharmaceutical Faculties, a member of the Methodological Council for Work with Foreign Students.

She actively takes part in seminars-meetings of Latin department heads of medical higher education institutions of Ukraine, meetings of the core department of Latin and fundamentals of medical terminology of Bogomolets National Medical University (Kyiv), Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University. S.I. Tykholaz was a jury member in the All-Ukrainian Student Olympiad in Latin (Ukrainian Medical Stomatological Academy (Poltava), Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University.
She teaches Ukrainian and foreign freshmen of medical, dental and pharmaceutical faculties on Latin language and medical terminology.
The course of Latin language and medical terminology for English-speaking foreign students of medical, dental and pharmaceutical faculties was successfully developed and published by Sophia Tykholaz.
Annually she prepares students including English-speaking ones to participate in the Student scientific circle, Student scientific conference and the first round of the All-Ukrainian Olympiad in the discipline.
She was a reviewer of three Sample programs of the discipline "Latin Language and Fundamentals of Medical Terminology" for the first- and second-year students of the medical faculty of Bogomolets National Medical University (Kyiv) (2016); two Curriculums of the discipline "Latin Language" for the Pharmacy Faculty of Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University (2016); at the request of the State Institution "Central Methodological Office for Higher Medical Education of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine" - two Manuals on Latin language of Bogomolets National Medical University (Kyiv) (2015, 2016); a number of textbooks, including national ones.
She is an author (co-author) of more than 150 publications (about 70 scientific and 80 educational and methodological ones), including monographs, Methodological recommendations for university lecturers and postgraduates; 20 scientific articles; 35 teaching and methodological manuals, including seven individual manuals on Latin language and medical terminology for English-speaking foreign students of medical, dental and pharmaceutical faculties.

Scientific interests: Linguistic didactics. Methodology of teaching Latin language and medical terminology. Professional orientation and professional speech competence of future physicians and pharmacists. Etymological, structural and semantic features of English medical terms.
