Department of Hygiene and Ecology of Vinnitsa National Pyrogov Memorial Medical University was organized in 1934.In that time on the base of existing before Pharmaceutical Institute (1921-1930 years),  Ukrainian Institute  of distant medical education (1930-1932 years), Evening Medical Institute (1932-1934) and Research institute of Health of rural dwellers  (1932-1934) was organized Vinnitsa State medical Institute with Medical-preventive and Pharmaceutical faculties. Moreover, the crucial role in this event played one of the founders of the national hygienic science L. Medved, later academician and Minister of Health of Ukraine.

From 1950 to 1952 functions of Acting Head of Department temporarily performed docents S.F.Zanozdra, M.P.Serhyi and I.M Ehrman.

From 1952 to 1960, the department was headed by a prominent hygienist of nowadays, one of the founders of National Hygiene as a  science, professor R.D.Habovych.

Over the past 15 years, 1 doctor (I.V.Serheta) and 17 candidates (L.I.Krasnova, I.V.Stempen, L.I.Hryhorchuk, A.Yu.Abunada, O.P.Molchanova, M. A.Redchits, T.V.Shevchuk, N.V.Malachkova, V.M.Mahnyuk, M.M.Shynkaruk-Dykovytska, T.H.Redko, K.A.Zaytseva, O.Yu.Bratkova, B. R.Borovskyy. O.Ye.Aleksandrova, O.L.Cherepaha, N.I.Osadchuk) performed their dissertations at the department. Now  2 doctoral and 7 PhD are in progress.

In the recent years scientists of the Department performed four regular and one industrial and contractual scientific surveys, another 3 complex scientific researches are in progress. A draft of the State sanitary rules and regulations was developed,  6 methodical recommendations and 22 newsletters were issued as well as  industry innovation with six different issues of modern hygiene.

Research activities are closely associated with productive educational and methodical work. Only in the last 7 years, the department issued 7 textbooks and 15 tutorials that are recommended for use in the practice of medical schools in Ukraine.

Science activity

In the first years after creation of the  department, and in the postwar period to the main directions of its activities should be  included: the formation of the teaching staff, equipment of the department with laboratory devices, scientific equipment and instruments, the effective organization of the learning process and so on. Also, much attention was paid to t and implementation of research process.

Thus, in these years were conducted extensive research in the field of  hygienic evaluation of groundwater quality and open water of Vinnytsia region - the main water sources for our population. On the basis of the sanitary regime, the Southern Bug in the area from its headwaters to Vinnitsa (A.T.Danilchenko, H.S.Gan, V.D.Buhovets, V.K.Bondar) was drafted sanitary zone for Supervision of Vinnitsa water supply (H.S.Gan, M.F.Poznyak), estimated state of rural water supply in Vinnytsia, Chmelnykskyi, Mogilev-Podolskyi, Sharhorodskyi and Kryzhopolskyi districts (V.I.Buhovets, L.M.Lopatyuk, B. H.Ivanov) peculiarities of wastewater impact on the composition of river water within the regional center (H.S.Han, R.A.Shrabshteyn, V.D.Buhovets, O.N.Heyneman). Projects of sanitary protection zones in the cities Mogilev-Podolsky, Zhmerynka and Bar (H.S.Han, M.F.Poznyak) were created as well.

A special place in the structure of scientific research on water-supply took work on the problems of determining the characteristics effect of fluoride on the human body (R.D.Habovych, V.I.Buhovets, N.A.Ermakova), which formed the basis for the publication of the monograph "Fluoride in nature and its hygienic significance "(R.D.Habovych, 1957), as well as work to study the characteristics of content in groundwater and vegetable products of local manufacture of some trace elements (I, Br, Co, Mn, Cu), which significantly supplemented existing data the chemical composition of food and given the opportunity to create the conditions to optimize local water supply (D.G.Devyatka, N.K.Valchuk).
For many years conducted research aimed at hygienic estimation of mineral water resort Khmilnik which allowed to determine the contents of the structure of organic and mineral water radioactivity and justify recommendations for their transport and use outside the resort area (H.S.Han, RD . Gabovich, D.H.Devyatka, V.I.Buhovets, M.A.Novytskyy, M.V.Pinevych).

Finally, fruitful scientific activity has allowed to the scientists of Hygiene Department on the basis of the implementation of hygienic standardization to develop maximum allowable concentrations for 18 chemicals in the water reservoirs (D.G.Devyatka, V.I.Buhovets, O.V.Yatsyna, LA L. Tsariuk, L.I.Krasnova).
Another important area of ​​research was a scientific work aimed at studying the sanitary condition of the soil of the winery and the degree of infestation of  population  by helminthes. defining measures to facilitate broad and comprehensive improvement of soil resources and preventing  invasions by helminthes. When assessing the working and living conditions of rural mechanics, especially tractor  drivers was developed and scientifically substantiated a set of measures of sanitary-technical, organizational and health care content (R.D.Gabovych, N.K.Valchuk), which is described in monograph "Sanitary and medical services for employees of MTS" (R.D.Gabovych, 1957).
Significant place in the department’s research field  had work for hygienic evaluation of working conditions in the sugar factories (M.B.Bilaha, R.D.Gabovych, N.K.Valchuk), which became the basis of the "Occupational Health in sugar production" in the three volume handbook in Occupational Health (R.D.Habovych, M.B.Bilaha, 1961) and the monograph "Health care for workers of the sugar industry" (M.B.Bilaha, 1963).
Great attention was paid to the study of the peculiarities of labor in Vinnytsia chemical plant for their hygienic regulation and adequate sanitation conditions for direct implementation of employment (B.S.Bakaleynykov, M.B.Bilaha, R.D.Habovych, L.L.Tsaryuk) as well as issues of hygienic evaluation of the production process for industrial regional center in various fields (L.L.Tsaryuk, L.I.Krasnova, O.V.Yatsyna).
For over twenty years the department has conducted research on the characteristics of the human organism pesticides that were created and subjected toksykometrychniy assessment and hygiene regulations (B.H.Ivanov, I.V.Zabotina, D.H.Dev a beautiful sight, LL . Tsariuk), the definition of simple and affordable methods of quantitative determination, etc. (B.H.Ivanov, S.Ye.Burkat).
Materials were described in the series "Medical library for collective farming industry" initiated by publishing "Health", and  "Occupational health growing beets" (Bilaha M. B., Martsynkovskyy L., Marchenko G. P.) and " Occupational hygiene in the processing of milk. "

For a long time the department was one of the most recognized in Ukraine in studying the effects on humans of natural ultraviolet radiation. The results allowed to identify the fact that in the ultraviolet deficiency in humans logged some serious changes, primarily from the performance of its reactivity, occurring changes in protein fractions of blood, reduced vitamin content in the blood, etc., more influenced by negative long-term effect on the body of excessive doses of ultraviolet radiation, especially if it is combined with the influence of other xenobiotics (D.H.Devyatka, T.T. Postolovska, O.V.Yatsyna, L.I.Krasnova).

In recent years, the priorities of research work are in the field of hygiene of children, adolescents and youth, adaptation process optimization, Mental Health, neuroscience and chronohygiene.
Thus, a study of the features of health and education, standards of physical development for rural students of Vinnytsia region (N.M.Feschuk), scientific substantiation of a  program of medicopreventive optimization, diagnostics, prognosis and correction of occupational adaptation of national and international students who study in Podolsk ethno-territorial region of Ukraine (H.P.Marchenko, I.V.Serheta, L.I.Hryhorchuk, O.P.Molchanova).
Significant place in the structure of research has taken a set of works on the development and support of a comprehensive program of rational organization of free time for modern students, which became the basis of the monograph "Leisure time and health of schoolchildren" (I.V.Serheta, V.H.Bardov, 1997), which was awarded National Academy of Science of Ukraine in the field of preventive medicine.
On the basis of hygienic, physiological, psychological and educational research hygienic regulation of personal computer using was carried out (I.V.Serheta, L.I.Krasnova, T.T.Postolovska, O.V.Yatsyna, N.M.Feschuk ).  The main results of the survey mentioned above are describeded in the book "Hygiene and Occupational Health of the PC user" (I.V.Serheta, V.H.Bardov, M.P.Oliynyk, 1999).

Department researchers studied the health aspects of professional adaptation of students to the learning environment in higher medical educational institutions and ways of its optimization developed approaches to diagnosis, prognosis and correction proficiency girls and boys are receiving medical profession (I.V.Serheta, LI . Grigorchuk, O.P.Molchanova), science-based sanitary base correction functional state of adolescents suffering from chronic physical conditions (I.V.Serheta, A.Yu.Abunada) hygienically grounded comprehensive optimization program of educational activities of junior school at school-lyceum (I.V.Serheta, M.A.Redchits) made hygienic evaluation of risk factors and prognostic criteria defined disease, sexually transmitted diseases among young people (I.V.Serheta, T.V.Shevchuk) , scientifically sound hygienic principles correcting changes in the functional state of the vision in 14-16 years in modern information loads (I.V.Serheta, N.V.Malachkova) peculiarities of relations between constitutional parameters and indicators cardiointervalography in adolescents with different types of hemodynamics (I.V.Serheta, M.M.Shynkaruk-Dykovytska) defined clinical and psychological characteristics of depressive disorders in women against involution and developed ways to psychohygienic correction (I.V.Serheta, T.H.Redko ), scientifically based methods of rational organization of academic and extracurricular activities of students enrolled in a "school - university" (I.V.Serheta, K.A.Zaytseva) Hygienic principles of prevention donozolohichnyh disorders in mental state adolescents (I.V.Serheta, O.Yu.Bratkova) defined scientific basis for the formation of high proficiency students and students of educational institutions railway (I.V.Serheta, BR Borovsky) made hygienic evaluation processes of the features individual students of medical universities and ways of their correction (I.V.Serheta, O.Ye.Aleksandrova) defined communication features of peripheral hemodynamics with anthropometric parameters teen various somatotypes (I.V.Serheta, O.L.Cherepaha ), the peculiarities of the physical development of schoolchildren 6-17 years Vinnitsa andpatterns its relationship with medical-social and physiological characteristics of children and adolescents (I.V.Serheta, N.I.Osadchuk).

Today in the center of research staff of the Department of hygienic problems of diagnosis and prognostic evaluation of patterns of processes and mental training process of students aged 14-17, hygienic aspects of diagnosis, prognostic evaluation and correction of chronic fatigue among students who are in today's schools, hygiene basics vocational guidance adolescents and youth, physiological and hygienic evaluation of physical activity for students and ways to optimize it, rations principles of Health-environment in higher education, the development of integrated criteria hygienic evaluation of the functional state of girls and boys, forming individual concepts of health of school age and adolescents, as well as study of aspects of hygienic factors intraschool  environment impact on the health of children, adolescents and youth.
